It’s the offseason, which means all eyes are currently on the future of the East Carolina football program. Football scheduling is a hot topic when it comes to the future of all programs in the FBS ranks, especially those in East Carolina’s position. The Pirates, who are known for their rigorous schedules in the 1980s, 1990s and into the 2000s, have backed off from those in recent years due to conference realignment, and other factors.

The landscape across the sport continues to change as well, making it more difficult than ever for ECU to land marquee home-and-home games with non-conference opponents. In addition, ECU athletics director Jon Gilbert has gone on record stating he’s trying to find the best balance between an attractive non-conference slate, but also giving the football team the best chance to compete for the ‘Group of 5’ highest-

East Carolina has three non-conference games for the 2027 schedule, and all of them are slated to be played inside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. The schedule includes renewing the series with FCS foe Western Carolina to open up the campaign, before welcoming ACC foe Wake Forest, and Sun Belt opposition Georgia State, to Greenville.

ECU last played the Catamounts in 2016, winning comfortably at home. ECU and Wake Forest have not played in football since 2005, and the Demon Deacons have not visited Greenville since 2004. The Georgia State contest is the return game from 2020, when ECU was beaten soundly in Atlanta in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
