On The Pat McAfee Show, Matt Rhule discusses why he prefers conventional recruitment to portals.
The Pat McAfee Show in a taped interview segment that aired Wednesday after talking up front for Big Ten Media Days.
McAfee and Rhule discussed a variety of topics including who will be Nebraska’s starting quarterback, why Nebraska fans stand out so much to Rhule and why McAfee needs to get to the state and why the coach prefers traditional recruiting to the transfer portal.
Rhule said his focus is continually on developing the people he spent months or even years trying to convince to come play for him.
“I just feel like if you come to play for me and you have a bunch of options, and you’ve decided to come play for the University of Nebraska to be in the program, then all of the sudden your junior year someone comes to play ahead of you because he got more NIL money.
“To me if there’s a hole there we’re always going to look to improve but I just don’t feel the need. Sometimes as coaches you’ll look at your team and say ‘I know what’s wrong’ and always trying to improve it but how about you coach your guys? How about you develop your own guys? I think if you look at the teams winning at the highest level they have some portal guys but they recruit at a really high level.”
Among the things Rhule says any talent evaluator has to do is determine how someone will fit and how they might contribute.
“You’re trying to figure out who the person is going to be in the program,” Rhule said. “Do they love football? Are they going to be able to handle adversity? Are they going to be part of a team? You’re trying to balance elite talent with elite character with elite football character.
