Spending Quality Time With Omarion Hampton of UNC During ACC Kickoff
North Carolina running back, after piling up the second-most rushing yards across any single football season in program history, while accumulating the fourth-most carries and finishing sixth in touchdown runs for a season.
And as the Tar Heels made the rounds Thursday at the ACC Kickoff event, he quietly set his sights on supplying even more production with the new 2024 season approaching. The junior Hampton mentioned a 2,000-yard rushing season as a lofty personal goal, and named do-it-all NFL star Christian McCaffrey when explaining the type of versatility and polish he hopes to add to his repertoire.
Hampton ran for more than 100 yards in seven games last season, becoming the first UNC player to accomplish that feat since Gio Bernard in 2011. He churned out 1,504 rushing yards in total to rank fifth nationally in the FBS. And during interview settings, he can softly and unassumingly respond to questions with a speedy modesty that belies the bulldozing manner with which he can plow through opposing defenses.
“I always didn’t talk a lot, but I know that’s something I’ve got to get better at,” Hampton said Thursday. “That’s been one of my focus points, to start speaking up more, because I want to be more of like a team leader. So I feel like for that, I want to speak up more and get better at different interviews and different things like that.”
