When North Carolina opened preseason training camp, offensive line coach Randy Clements was in a hospital bed rather than on a football field, the sudden result of a health scare that sent him to the emergency room.
Clements, who turns 58 years old in September, said a digestive tract infection bothered him during the summer and worsened, spreading to other areas of his body. On July 28, the day that UNC players reported for training camp, Clements said he had become stricken by fever, chills and nausea, which served as the effective tipping point to check himself into UNC Hospitals.
“I ended up getting this stuff they call sepsis, where the infection was in my blood going to different parts,” Clements said Monday, after the Tar Heels finished their practice session. “So it got pretty serious. Had to go to the ER, but they diagnosed it pretty quick.
“The hospital is a sobering place, because no matter how bad you feel, there’s somebody in there that’s a lot worse off than you. So I appreciate everybody at UNC (Hospitals) over there that helped me get back out on the field.”
Sepsis is an improper reaction by the body in response to an infection. It can lead to organ failure, tissue damage and, in extreme cases, be fatal.
Clements was hospitalized for eight days, and missed the Tar Heels’ first six practices of the preseason. He said his blood pressure dropped to 80 over 40, his heart rate increased to 160 beats per minute, and that he was “out of whack.” The infection, he said, was drug resistant, so doctors had to search for the proper antibiotics. He now is taking an antibiotic daily, and his wife, Polly, is attending UNC’s practices to ensure he stays hydrated.
