Transfer from Georgia Tech to Carolina Basketball Claude Tyzhaun
North Carolina has made a late addition to its 2024-25 roster. Georgia Tech transfer forward Tyzhaun Claude announced his commitment to the Tar Heels on Wednesday.
Claude, a five-year collegian listed at 6-foot-7, 226 pounds, entered the transfer portal on April 1 but received news from the NCAA just this past week that he’d been granted a waiver to be eligible to play in 2024-25. Georgetown had been heavily in pursuit, according to a source.
He averaged 4.8 points and 5.2 rebounds in 32 games (with 4 starts) last season for the Yellow Jackets. His offensive rebounding percentage of 15.7% ranked No. 10 in the nation, according to KenPom. Claude posted nine points, eight rebounds, and three blocks in Georgia Tech’s 74-73 upset win over UNC on Jan. 30.
“Ty is the ultimate lunch-pail guy,” said Georgia Tech coach Damon Stoudamire. “His bread and butter is on the box, and he plays so hard.”
Claude, a Goldsboro, N.C. native, will be joining the fourth program of his college career. He started at Morehead State, where he spent three years, but he missed most of his final two seasons there because of an ACL injury. Then he transferred to Western Carolina, averaging 15.4 points and a conference-leading 8.6 rebounds.
Since UNC’s March 29 loss in the NCAA Tournament, head coach Hubert Davis hasn’t made any public comments, but he’s been busy with an offseason roster rebuild that has spanned five months.
The Tar Heel staff entered the portal season seeking a perimeter shooter and frontcourt help. They got that shooter in late April, with a commitment from Belmont transfer Cade Tyson, but the search for post help proved to be more of a challenge. Some early targets didn’t pan out, and a couple of targets chose elsewhere, before UNC received a commitment from Vanderbilt forward Ven-Allen Lubin in late May. Since then, with multiple scholarships available, UNC continued to evaluate options, including exploring international post players.
