Layne Riggs, a former NASCAR driver, sat down with a reporter to discuss his feelings after quitting the sport. The conversation was candid and emotional, as Riggs reflected on his decision to step away from the track.
“I’m still trying to process everything,” Riggs said, his voice laced with emotion. “It’s like I’m grieving the loss of a part of myself. Racing was my identity, and now it’s gone. It’s tough to accept that I’ll never get to feel that rush of adrenaline again, that sense of accomplishment when I crossed the finish line.”
Riggs spoke about the struggles he faced during his time in NASCAR, from the physical toll of racing to the mental pressure of performing at a high level. He described feeling like he was constantly living in a state of high alert, never truly able to relax or let his guard down.
“I felt like I was just going through the motions, you know?” Riggs said. “I was so focused on making sure I didn’t make any mistakes that I forgot to enjoy the ride. I forgot why I started racing in the first place – for the love of it.”
Riggs also spoke about the impact that his decision to quit racing had on his personal relationships. He described feeling guilty for not being able to spend as much time with his loved ones, and for putting them through the stress and uncertainty that came with his career.
“It’s hard to explain to people who don’t understand what it’s like to be a professional athlete,” Riggs said. “They think it’s all glamour and glory, but they don’t see the sacrifices you have to make. They don’t see the toll it takes on your body and mind. And they don’t see the loneliness that comes with being on the road all the time.”
Despite the challenges he faced, Riggs said that he has no regrets about his decision to quit racing. He described feeling a sense of freedom and peace that he had not experienced in years, and he is excited to explore new opportunities and pursue hobbies that bring him joy.
“I’m not saying it’s easy,” Riggs said. “I’m still figuring things out, still trying to find my new normal. But I’m grateful for the experience I had, and I’m grateful for the chance to start anew. I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
