Tensions in Plateau State have taken a new turn as a prominent cleric, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, issued a strong warning to Sheikh Ahmad Gumi over an alleged threat directed at American missionary Alex Barbir. The development comes in the wake of renewed violence in Jos, where recent attacks have left many dead and several others injured, sparking outrage both locally and internationally.

Rev. Dachomo, speaking during a press briefing, condemned what he described as “reckless and dangerous rhetoric” that could further inflame an already tense situation. He stressed that Plateau State, particularly Jos, has suffered repeated cycles of violence, and any form of incitement or threat—whether direct or implied—must be taken seriously. According to him, targeting individuals who speak out about the killings only distracts from the urgent need to address the root causes of the crisis.

The controversy reportedly began after Alex Barbir publicly condemned the killings in Jos, calling for urgent intervention and protection for vulnerable communities. His comments drew mixed reactions, with some praising his concern while others accused him of misrepresenting the situation. Allegations later surfaced that Sheikh Gumi made remarks perceived as threatening toward the missionary, prompting widespread concern and calls for clarification.

In his response, Rev. Dachomo urged Sheikh Gumi to exercise restraint and promote peace, emphasizing the responsibility of religious leaders to calm tensions rather than escalate them. He warned that statements capable of being interpreted as threats could have serious consequences, especially in a region already grappling with deep-seated ethnic and religious divisions.

Community leaders and observers have also weighed in, calling for unity and constructive dialogue. Many believe that the focus should remain on protecting lives, supporting victims, and ensuring that perpetrators of the violence are brought to justice. The ongoing crisis in Jos has once again highlighted the fragility of peace in the region and the urgent need for coordinated efforts from government, security agencies, and religious figures.

As the situation continues to unfold, residents of Plateau State remain on edge, hoping for calm and meaningful action. The exchange between these prominent figures underscores the broader challenge of managing sensitive narratives in times of conflict, where words can either heal or deepen

divisions.
