AFL Round 17: Lions beat Power as Powell-Pepper injures knee, Geelong’s Cameron kicks goal 700, Hawks, Suns win, as it happened
Defending premiers Brisbane Lions beat Port Adelaide to keep their top two spot, but the Power have to cope with a serious injury to Sam Powell-Pepper.
The Port Adelaide veteran has a suspected ACL injury after coming off in distress in the third quarter at the Gabba.
Power coach Ken Hinkley showed his emotions in the post-match press conference, saying that it was believed that Powell-Pepper had done the ACL in his left knee after missing most of his season with a similar injury to his right knee. “We’ll get the scans back in the next couple of days, but that’s really, really sad,” Hinkley said.
“It gets a bit sadder for me because it’s my last game of coaching Sam, and he’s been such a great player for me.
“It’s really difficult when you have someone that you really care about and something like this happens to them the second time, on the other leg.
“I wish him a speedy recovery and I know he’ll be a great player for Port Adelaide.”
The Lions overcame a poor start to kick seven goals in 17 minutes in the first quarter to set up an 18.12 (120) to 14.8 (92) win at home. In the other night game, Hawthorn maintained their challenge for the top four with a 14.10 (94) to 10.14 (74) victory over St Kilda at Docklands.
Earlier, Geelong made light work of Richmond at Kardinia Park as star forward Jeremy Cameron celebrated his 700th career goal.
The Cats beat the Tigers, who also lost young gun Sam Lalor to another hamstring injury in the first minute of the match, by 72 points.
Nate Caddy will face scrutiny over a collision with an umpire at Docklands, after the Suns overran the Dons at Docklands.
The Bombers put up a fight for three quarters but fell away in the last, beaten by Gold Coast by 41 points.

The Sydney Swans host Fremantle, with the Dockers knowing they must win to keep level on points with the lower half of the top eight.
Then the round comes to a close at the Adelaide Oval, where the Crows face Melbourne, with the chance to go back to third with a win.

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has shown his emotions in the post-game press conference, discussing the apparent knee injury to Sam Powell-Pepper.
The Power player tore the ACL in his right knee early last season.
It appears that Powell-Pepper has now done the same ligament in his other knee. If so, it ends his season.
And Hinkley has spoken about it minutes ago.
“We’ll get the scans back in the next couple of days, but that’s really, really sad,” Hinkley said.
